               LOOK EAST

Five years of glances in the effort to define the lands where the sun seems to rise earlier.

Through the working people’s looks, untold stories are revealed. Those that are aloof to hardships endured under an unrelenting evening sun. These stares are more awake, more serene and hold a fresher glint than their destiny; eyes as big as washed out dawns, obliterating the long exposed hours in light.

Gonzalo Ortiz’s view, filtered by lenses and years of seeing, offers a deep sobriety to his photography, in contrast to what Ramón Gómez de la Serna stated to those of his trade: “In the home of a photographer, one goes crazy always looking and smiling, even when there is no reason to look or smile.”  In this series, the artist’s shared sense of earnestness with his subject, captures the fresh spontaneity of solemn and serene gazes, reflections of souls that walk towards sanity and calm.
